Functioning in a Dysfunctional Workplace
Sometimes the greatest challenges lay not within the actions of competitors, or the needs of customers, they come from within one’s own company. People new to their positions either through promotion, or as a new hire, are often stunned at the challenges they find waiting for them as they slide into the seat behind their new desk. The business cards have barely been ordered before elements of dysfunction begin to appear at their office door.
Does any of the following sound familiar? Processes within your organization take longer and cost more than they should. Most employees can’t explain how what they do specifically contributes to what the company is trying to accomplish. The majority of meetings result in the decision to have more meetings, with very little actually getting acc-omplished. New initiatives are greeted by employees with the belief that they won’t succeed.
These are not just the makings of good Dilbert cartoons. Sadly, these situations exist in organ-izations across the country. They are symptoms of a dysfunctional company.
Surviving the challenges of dysfunction is no simple task. A misstep can put you in the quicksand of beurocracy, the line of fire from competing factions, or possibly even the unemployment line. But for those that learn to survive and thrive, the rewards are significant.
Not only do they have the satisfaction of knowing they helped eliminate some of the dysfunction, they are seen, and rightfully so, as people who can get things done. People with that quality are a rarity, and are stars who are always in demand.
Are you faced with functioning in a dysfunctional company? Do the scenarios identified above represent a subset of what you face each day? If so, consider using these tips as part of your survival guide.
#1 Be Part of the Solution Not Part of the Problem
Sociologists have done extensive studies on behavioral patterns among groups and have uncovered some interesting results that can be applied in the workplace. For example, in city areas with empty lots, people were far more likely to throw trash on the ground if the lot already had some trash in it, than if the lot was clean.
Through these findings and others like them, the researchers came to the conclusion that people will imitate behavior which appears to be socially acceptable, even if it is not their normal behavior. In other words, people imitate other people’s actions. Stated in the context of a company, people acting dysfunctionally will influence others to also act dysfunctionally.
Being part of the solution breaks the chain. Conduct yourself in a functional way, and you will not only create a positive behavior for others to follow, but you also won’t provide a dysfunctional example that others might imitate.
For Example: At the end of meetings take the initiative to help the group identify what steps need to be taken, who is responsible for them, and timelines for getting them done. Be the first to volunteer to take on a respon-sibility. After the meeting, send out a list with the what, who, and timelines and review it at the next meeting.
If it is your meeting, and the attendees are your direct reports, make sure people are held accountable for completing their respective tasks. If it is not your meeting, make sure you get your tasks complete. Again, individuals who actually get things done are stars. Be one of those people.
#2 Share Your Ideas
Don’t make the mistake of assuming that what is painfully obvious to you is equally obvious to your peers, subordinates, boss, or other leaders in the organization. Everyone has a unique background and what is common knowledge to one person might be a life changing revelation for another. When you see examples of dysfunctional actions, share your ideas on how to improve the situation. Don’t blame or criticize others. Instead, ask people what they are trying to accomplish and then offer up your ideas along with the reasons why you think they will help.
Many smart individuals are too quick to make the assumption “Well, they should know that” when dealing with peers or bosses. This is especially true when people are dealing with bosses that are more than one level above them.
The reality is that either the people do know, and there are other factors that you are unaware of, or they don’t know and your ideas may be just the thing they need. At a minimum you will be seen as a person with initiative who has good ideas and is trying to better the company, and you may just be the person who saves the day.
For Example: A common “idea” opportunity exists with processes. What in your area seems to take an inordinate amount of time, requires many different people to be involved, or costs a great deal per transaction? If you have seen these processes done better somewhere else, or can draw from your unique background to provide a simple solution, then take some time, write out your ideas, and let people know.
#3 Be Fearless, Not Foolish, and Bring Solutions
When you have ideas to share, do it in a way that is fearless, not foolish, and if it is a suggestion for improving a dysfunctional problem, make sure you bring solutions. There is a fine line between having the courage to let others know what you believe and telling others that they should believe you. Error on the side of the first alternative.
For Example: Setting up a meeting with your boss to explain why you think the Travel and Expense process is costing the company too much money should involve doing some research on what the process is, how long it has been in place, and why it exists as it does. Once you know all those facts, identify some possible solutions. A meeting after you have done all that, will have a very different feel than walking in and telling your boss the process should be changed because it is inefficient. One is fearless, the other is foolish and without coming up with possible suggestions, it is also just complaining.
#4 Be Optimistic
It is unlikely that the life goal of those who founded the company or those who are running the company is the creation of a place where people spend 40 or more hours per week at a place that is dysfunctional. More likely is that over time dysfunction reared its head, and for some reason has grown and spread.
It could have been the result of competing cultures after a buy-out, growth pains as the organization got larger, or possibly just bad leadership. However it began, like a scene from an adventure movie, where weeds and vines are overtaking a lost civilization, dysfunction is trying to overtake this potentially high performing company.
Be optimistic that you and your fellow employees can cut back those vines of dysfunction.
For Example: In meetings where people are discussing existing problems, resist the urge to join those who are comfortable making statements like “We’ve just always been poor at that, or “This new plan will never work” or “We’ve tried that three times already.” Instead, offer support for what is being attempted, and give actual reasons why it is likely to work. If it isn’t likely to work, then go back to #s 1, 2, and 3.
Success begins with believing success is possible. Be optimistic that the dysfunctional state can be turned around and that people are trying to do it.
Dysfunction can be challenging, taxing, and difficult to deal with. It also represents an excellent opportunity for capable people to step up and make a difference. Follow the four tips and be one of the people who can function in the midst of dysfunction. Then be ready for a promotion.

It Looked Pretty Good to Me: Junk In! Junk Out! It May not be as Sweet and Full of Flavor as You Thi
Don’t fiddle with the characteristics of a best-selling existing product. Remember that a few years a go the owner of the “most valuble” trade name in the World changed the taste of their “battleship” cola. They did it after much testing and trials by consumer groups. But when they put it on the market, their customers didn’t give one hoot about all of their thinking and testing. They took one sip and said, “What in all hell is this?” The company had to rename their classic cola to get their customers back. The new cola never took hold. After a company has been in business for many years, the idea to change an existing brand often comes from new employees. They use their testing results to overcome the objections of the old hands that know better. Watch out! Read on from my experience.
As bad as things were during the depression, some businesses struggled along and stayed in business. Of those that survived, not a few made a bundle during WWII. One company in my home town made stoves for army barracks. The owner became a millionaire in just a couple of years.
In my neighborhood, on the wrong side of the tracks, near the state fairgrounds, there was a small popcorn company. The main product was called something like Krispat. I don’t remember how the name of the product was spelled, even though I must have eaten a zillion of the things.
This small company blossomed when the army decided to turn the fairgrounds into an army training camp. We kids loved the obstacle course and we could zip over it about twice as fast as the recruits being trained. After and during all this training, the family that owned the popcorn factory made sure the product was near the noses of the G.I.s and they sold thousands of “Krispats.”
At the end of the war, the company was well-positioned and had a large clientele of retail outlets for their products. However, the owners moved to Hawaii and decided to sell the business. A gentleman bought the business and things went well. My mother, my sisters, and half the women in our neighborhood worked there at one time or another. I worked there too. I was dressed as a clown and dumped at the junction of three roads up a canyon east of the city. On weekends it was very busy. I would wave my popcorn at the cars and many of them stopped. At the end of the day when I was picked up, I would be out of product.
Well, the “Krispat” was a yummy thing. I used to watch them make them in the factory. The popcorn was mixed with a wonderful caramel syrup, then pressed into hockey-puck-sized discs which came down a conveyor belt. The girls and women on both sides of the belt grabbed about four of those disk and pressed them together into a role. Each roll was placed in an easily recognizable paper wrapper that said, “YUMMY!” These were placed in cartons ready for shipment.
Then the business went Kaput over night!
The new owner had bought some crummy-tasting syrup at a low cost. As soon as I tasted the product, I knew he was in trouble.
And I was an “expert” on what happened and I knew what to do about it.
After the war, a company which an older friend of mine invested in (and worked in too) went Kaput! It was a soft drink company with an excellent product. One of the major stockholders got a bargain on some syrup. It ruined the flavor. He wouldn’t get rid of the junk. The company went bankrupt.
That is exactly what happened to the popcorn company. I was only a teenager, but I warned the owner. I begged him to get rid of the crummy-tasting caramel syrup he had bought at a bargain. But the poor man ran out of money before he decided that he would have to change the syrup to survive. It made me so sad to see a company go under that I thought was a model for my future in business. The owner couldn’t keep from going under: BLUB! BLUB! BLUB!

Info About the Remarkable Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is alleged to be the largest inhabited castles around and the oldest in continuous inhabitation (more than nine hundred years). It’s 1 of Queen Elizabeth’s 3 key residences, and is regularly thought to be the Queens much beloved home. The Royal colours flies above the Round Tower of Windsor Castle on every occasion Queen Elizabeth 2 is in residence – however, at alternative times, the Union Jack banner flutters in its position.
Samuel Pepys once commented Windsor Castle to be “the most adored castle in the world.” That was said in 1666, & the same can be said still.
Windsor Castle Moving History:
The building of Windsor can be located in the early seventh century Saxon parish of Windlesora, where the current day village of Old Windsor can be located. The town of Windsor is accurately well-known as the “New Windsor” – the actual phrase “new” being referenced in a loose way! The England tourism board has plenty of other Royal attractions to visit in England.
Windsor Castle was at the beginning put up by the eminent William the Conqueror, following his hit of England in ten-sixty-six. The original construction was built from timber with earth walls. Windsor Castle held an understandable strategic position on a big hill high above the River Thames, & was a fraction of a circle of palaces surrounding the Capital, with the Tower of London, one whole days trek away, at its heart.
The Palace was later remade in stone, and increased in significance over the years. Henry II made the Round Tower and the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the structure’s primary role became that of a royal home. The Castle has stayed principally unaffected from the start of the 19th century, apart from the refurbishment work right after the terrible fire.
Basic Fact About Web Directories
As soon as we enter internet, we can face many words refer to some new meanings. Actually, in the world of internet, there are some basic facts, which must be put into consideration. Initially, it must not confuse with the various words and idioms on the web. Web directories refer to some web sites as a special in linking to them. They also are specialized in categorizing the concerned links. Those directories do not show lists of web pages according to keywords, but they determine sites according to their subcategory along with category as well. It must consider that the directories permit the owners of sites to submit their sites links and review submissions as well.
It must notice that web directories are so general and may list sites across regions, categories, and languages as well. Generally, most of them depend on special areas and languages as well. There are different categories of listings, which are focused on the paid price of inclusion. Those categories are such as free submission, reciprocal links, paid submissions, no follow that means that the search engine cannot follow the special link, featured listing to give homepage as an example, bid for position, and affiliate links as well. Knowing the basic meaning of them will be great in facilitating the dealing with internet.

Loans are Not Only for Homeowners, Get Tenant Loans
Loan market is increasing with increasing cost of living. Earlier it was believed that if you own a home there are better chance for getting a loan. This is not a false statement; yes your home can get you better deals. But what about those people who are living as tenants and lacking anything to offer as collateral. Are they left out from the race of getting a loan….???. No they won’t…..with the arrival of tenant loans, popularly known as unsecured personal loans, you can apply a loan without offering anything as security.
Tenant loans are loans for your personal needs like debt consolidation, business financing, and education, health, buying property, boat, car and other such personal needs. The best thing about these loans is that you don’t have to mention the purpose of the loan to the lender. You can use the amount the way you want to use it.
Tenant loans give you the freedom from the stress and anxiety of loosing your asset as in case of secured loans. As the valuation of the collateral is not involved these loans are approved faster. Reduced and hassle free paperwork allows you to apply for these loans quite easily. Like any other unsecured loan, a tenant loan comes with a slightly higher interest rate. You can apply for a tenant loans if you are a tenant, a student or even a homeowner who don’t want to put their property at stake.
One thing which needs to be taken care of while applying for a tenant loan is your credit score. As there is no collateral, no security for the loan, only your credit score gives him some assurance that he is going to get back his money. You can obtain your credit score from credit rating agencies. They will also suggest you the ways to improve your credit score.
Normally you can apply a tenant loan for amounts ranging between ₤1000 to ₤25000. You may get higher amounts and better interest rates with little negotiations with the lender. Remember the effort is yours because the money is yours. It is highly recommended to not to apply for a loan amount which you can’t repay afterwards. Always determine your repayment ability before deciding any such loan amount.
The last but most important thing is to research properly for loan lenders. Beware of loan sharks and frauds in the loan market. Properly read terms and conditions of the loan agreement as it may contain hidden terms which can cost you later. So start searching now and get the best deals in tenant loans for your personal needs.

Work Longer, Live Longer, & Prosper
When I was consulting to a major financial company I worked with a person who was quite a successful manager. She had risen in the ranks and was earning a hefty six-figure income.
But as time passed she shared her deepest wish with me: she simply couldn’t wait to retire. This seemed odd, considering the fact that she was in her early fifties.
I asked her what she planned to do with all of her free time and she replied with glazed eyes, “I just want to fish.”
“Fish?”
“Yep, just go out on a lake by myself, cast a line, and kick back.”
I couldn’t imagine her being happy in a canoe instead of a corporate headquarters. But there are millions of people in the same boat.
Retirement looms large on their dreamy horizons. They can sleep in, stay up late, not answer to anybody, and just “be.”
Seems fair enough, doesn’t it? If they’ve been busting it for decades shouldn’t they be able to hang loose and waddle to a different drummer, or just let the parade pass them by?
But I sense in some who long for retirement that they don’t want to simply “be” as much as they long to be left alone. Having answered to others in businesses or occupations not of their own making, they can’t wait to place “do not disturb” signs on the doors leading to the rest of their lives.
For entrepreneurs and many independent professionals, the opposite may apply. As time passes they seem to get more joy from their labors instead of less. Some strive mightily to avoid having to retire.
A good example is Dr. F. William Sunderman, who died recently, at the age of 104. He was a man of many talents and pursuits.
Physician to the Manhattan Project in World War II, his research helped to cast light on topics as diverse as diabetes and lead poisoning in police officers. An accomplished musician, he played a 1694 Stradivarius violin at Carnegie Hall at the age of 99. Congress honored him as the nation’s oldest worker when he turned 100.
He loved to work. When interviewed by the Philadelphia Inquirer, he said he had friends who retired and drank more, got bored, and died. “Well, I want to live,” he asserted.
Quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Sunderman was convinced that “One of the most important items for longevity is the maintenance of a daily work schedule.”
According to management guru and my professor Peter F. Drucker, who worked well into his nineties, retirees miss working for other reasons. In addition to the work itself, “They miss the gossip,” he quips.
A dozen years have elapsed since that manager shared her retirement plans with me. Though I have nothing against fishing, I’m happy to report that she continues to work long, live long, and prosper.

Manage Your Business from the Rockies, not the Prairies
The day job as a manager is all about managing your people to deliver, to meet the needs of your customers or clients and generating success after success! Right? And you have consequences if that doesn’t happen.
Worst case scenario is that you lose your job or your business, because your people haven’t delivered. So the temptation is understandable. Get in there, dirty your hands and work your socks off making it happen.
Admirable, fulfilling even!
But how much energy have you got? How hard do your really want to work. Indeed, how long can you take the pace of keeping everyone else afloat. Before you fall apart, or it kills you?
Or, despite all your years of strife and giving your heart and soul for your business, you lose it, or your job, or both.
It doesn’t seem fair does it?
But there is another way – and it’s easy.
Use your people better
Space ships sent off into the far universe, use the gravitational pull of planets to accelerate them onwards, just like gravity pulls us to earth. It’s free energy!
The limited fuel that the rockets have, is used to ever-so-gently fine tune direction, so that as they approach the planet pulling them in, they alter their course to miss the planet and, with renewed energy, they carry on their mission. Clever stuff eh?
That’s what you can do
If you play a bigger game than spending your whole life doing the job that others can and should be doing, in the false belief that you are ‘helping out’, then you aren’t going to cut it. In fact, like I once realised, moving from one sized store to a bigger one – you cannot do it all – it’s time to manage the business through the people – it’s just too big for me now.
And that was a big and painful realisation for me
But I got it!
It came to me one Easter, when I was running a big store and I was filling up the Easter eggs. It was fun! But I wasn’t doing what I was paid for – managing and even leading a great bunch of people, all of whom could do this better than me. It was time to do my job. The time had come to leverage their potential and create value using my unique skills and talents.
As it happened, my office was on the fourth floor (because it had a view!) and the business traded on the lowest two floors. And this became my metaphor for managing from high up. The Rockies, not the Prairies.
Even though I spent a lot of my time on the Prairies, I was, in my mind, way up high. I was managing the people from above. I was managing the great people I had.
I was able to step back from working ‘in the business’ to ‘on the business’, as Michael Gerber would say. And it made a great difference to me. I realised that part of it was showing my troops that I was working just as hard as they were, and, indeed, I could do their job pretty well.
Yet, I was also resisting where the stretch was for me – letting go of other people’s jobs, and doing my own.
For me, it was a shift to the next level, Sure, I did my hands on stuff from time to time. But it was at my choice and to work with them to show soldarity and focus when the chips were down. But it was after the management stuff was done.
It was my way of bringing the Rockies down to the Prairies, yet enjoying the fruits of both.

3 Simple Steps to Choosing the Right Radio Frequency
Copyright 2006 Bravos Direct
When the RC frequency spectrum was first introduced to provide controlled facilities for radio control (RC) modelers, it was limited to a set of just six. These frequencies were not labeled with channel numbers as they are today, but were represented by multi-colored flags; purple/white for 72.320 MHz (megahertz), red/white for 72.240 MHz, etc. Having only 6 frequencies to choose from was quite restrictive and meant a lot of RC airplane pilots had to be grounded, waiting to take their turn on a given frequency. The RC model airplane frequency spectrum today is much broader, consisting of 50 separate 72 MHz channels for general use, a few 27 MHz channels for park flyers, and a handful of other more specialized channels reserved for licensed amateur radio operators.
So now you’ve decided to buy your RC model and radio equipment you also need to decide which radio frequency you are going to operate on. Unlike most other features of the sport, choosing a popular channel which is used by lots of other people is not a good idea. Choosing a standard 72 MHz frequency for your radio can be as simple as going to the local hobby store and purchasing one with a standard radio setup. But randomly choosing a channel can result in a problem if you don’t do a little investigation first.
Firstly, decide whether you are going to be a park flyer using 27 MHz or going for a more advanced setup on 72 MHz. The 27 MHz channels are primarily dedicated to what are considered “park flyers”. These pre-packaged systems usually come with everything you need to get up and flying and are intended for the casual flyer that just wants to get out, get in the air, and not mess with the higher cost of a more complex airplane and radio setup. Choosing a RC model airplane park flyer package with a pre-set frequency needs little to no investigation since you have little choice as the packages give you a choice of only 3 or 4 channels, some FM(frequency modulated), some AM(amplitude modulated).
Channel conflicts in a RC park flying situation are less common due to the large number of parks and flying areas available to the casual pilot. But if you do invest in a park flyer then be aware that there may well be other pilots out there in the park using the same frequency as you – and that can mean expensive trouble when you lose control of your airplane because of someone else’s signal, or even worse, if some stranger accuses you of causing his airplane to crash.
Second, if you are going for 72 MHz then visit your flying field and find out what other people are using. Imagine arriving to your favorite RC model airplane flying field only to find someone else already using the channel you have just paid out good money for. Some clubs have rules pertaining to what happens in this situation. As only one pilot can operate at a time on a given frequency this usually means pilots having to switch off and take turns using the frequency – and some means of the club controlling the changeover process either by physically taking control of the transmitter or just having a procedure written into the club rules. If you are flying at a busy site that is not a sanctioned flying club with rules and bylaws, you might find yourself sitting out and unable to fly for the day.
The smartest way to choose an RC frequency for your radio is to do some legwork first. Visit the field where you will do most of your flying. Investigate what channels are already in use and which channels are seldom used. Finding one that is infrequently used or not used at all will allow you to buy, secure in the knowledge that you will be able to fly with minimum interruption.
Third, make sure you can change the frequency after you have bought the equipment. If you take care to check before you buy whether the system will allow you to do a manual crystal replacement then if you run into a problem you can change later to a channel which is less busy. Some crystal changes you can do yourself while others have to go back to the factory to have the work done. Regardless of your current situation, if you already have an RC radio setup, or just thinking about getting one, doing a little footwork up front can go a long way to ensuring you get maximum enjoyment and flying hours out of your RC model.

Coaching covers a variety of areas and it helps to be aware of them all
Coaching can cover many different areas from sport to business and it is essential that you make yourself aware of coaching in general before you get involved in a single area. If you joined a sport in grade school you had a coach explain to you the rules and the best strategy to use to help win the game. In high school you had this same advantage, but once you reach the grown up world you may think you don’t have this advantage anymore. This is not always true, there are coaches out there to help you be the best you possibly and this also applies to the business world as well.
Over the years companies have realized that using coaches in the business world can make a big difference in their corporation. Coaches in the business world can really help, for example if you are an employee trying to get a head it can give you an advantage over other employees. If you are a supervisor who hires a coach for the employee you may be giving your company an advantage over other companies. Whichever way fits your needs it is a fact coaching can make an impact in the world of industry.
Just because an offer from a coach sounds good, in reality it may not be the right one for you; therefore you need to be sure and check out all the information given to you before accepting an offer. Don?t accept the first offer that come to you, check out several choices, compare, and then choose. You are searching for a coach that can offer you the most help in the areas of business that you are concerned with, along with someone with a good reputation of proving themselves as an excellent coach.
Accessing the web to look for a coach that would be right for you is probably the best way to find one.
