The Race for Number Eight
In any type of normal world, the race for the No. 8 seed in either Conference wouldn’t matter at all, save for adding some interest to the final third of the season. In the East, the No. 8 crew will probably draw the Miami Heat in round one, facing off against the inside-outside twosome of Shaq and D-Wade, who are poised to bring a big golden trophy to South Beach. It won’t be pretty.
The picture’s a bit different in the West, though — the battle for the No. 8 slot is a tighter affair, and there’s interest from close NBA watchers. Granted, the last team in draws either the Spurs or the Suns, and both are going to be hard to knock off. But — let’s say Steve Nash’s injuries continue to nag at him. Let’s also take into account that playoff basketball slows down and focuses on half-court sets. The Suns suddenly seem beatable, right? The Spurs are a bit tougher — they thrive in half-court sets, and they’re the definition of consistent.
Still, let’s say the Lakers get the No. 8 seed — a possibility we’ll investigate. The Lake Show has reached 4 of the last 5 Finals — granted, with a vastly different chemistry. But Kobe is still a rare player. Let’s say Minnesota gets in just under the line — they were the No. 1 seed last year, and possess arguably the league’s most game-altering player in Kevin Garnett. And if the Nuggets — a young, eccentric mix of quality players — get the nod, they might have enough firepower to run a full series with either San Antonio or Phoenix.
Since the No. 8 seed in the West could, theoretically, knock off a potential No. 1, we decided to investigate who’s most likely to come out as No. 8 in late April. We evaluated only the Lakers, T-Wolves, and Nuggets, because let’s be honest — as good as the Clippers have played this year, do you honestly see them anywhere near the NBA Playoffs? We thought so.
Each team is assigned 3 (highest), 2, or 1 (lowest) points in four different categories: Personnel, Coaching, Remaining Schedule, and Intangibles. Scientific, no?
Personnel: The Lakers have Kobe, who is arguably the best player in the game. He’s struggled without a presence in the middle (no offense to Chris Mihm…), and there’s serious strains on his image following the rape trial and tumultuous breakup of the championship run Lakers. Beyond Mr. Bryant, though, Los Angeles doesn’t have much. Caron Butler was promising as a rookie, but hasn’t done a ton since then. Lamar Odom is the second key to this team — he needs to play at the level he’s capable of playing at, and he hasn’t been doing that. He goes in the tank more than Vince Carter claims he went in the tank in Canada, especially against higher-level foes.
The Timberwolves have an amazing team on paper. Garnett, the reigning MVP, can beat you every which way. Sam Cassell is an experienced, showstopper point guard, and Latrell Sprewell can still score in buckets. Wally World gets injured, sure, but he’s got game. The problem is, the entire team has underachieved this year, which creates a need for big games from Trenton Hassell and others. That shouldn’t be necessary given this squad, especially when Sprewell is playing for 14 million per (even though he’s apparently below the poverty line).
The Nuggets are good all-around. We’re still waiting for Camby to tear something, and Nene has been on the injured list since Valentine’s Day. Carmelo Anthony has slumped a bit in his sophomore campaign, and he doesn’t play defense much at all. Earl Boykins has become a star here, regularly pacing the team in scoring, and Andre Miller — who must be with his 19th NBA team by now — seems to have acquired the poise of a true floor general, leading this team pretty well on most nights. K-Mart has been energized by the recent hire of George Karl.
Points: Nuggets 3, T-Wolves 2, Lakers 1
Coaching: Who’s Frank Hamblen? He’s not Rudy T. He’s not Coach K. He’s not Phil Jackson. In sum, he’s probably not good enough.
Kevin McHale probably shouldn’t have pulled the plug so soon on Flip Saunders. Saunders was a great coach, and a playoff upset this year would have re-invigorated his team. Now, McHale’s got himself on the bench. Let’s consider other 1980s Celtics as coaches — ML Carr, Danny Ainge, Larry Bird. Moderate successes, yes, but are any still coaching? There’s a reason why… eventually, they all underachieved. Putting an underachiever with a group of underachievers probably isn’t the best mix…
George Karl is a savvy veteran coach. You can say all you want about his conspicuous lack of jewelry, but he’s won 60 games twice. The Nuggets have never won 60 games. The Nuggets have been on fire since he got the job from Michael Cooper by way of Jeff Bzedlik, recently winning six in a row. ‘Melo’s game is more diverse, more guys are getting quality minutes, and the team seems to play with a confidence and unity previously lacking. Karl was the right addition here, even counting rumors that he might be looking to ship Anthony away for his fear of playing tight defense.
Points: Nuggets 3, T-Wolves 2, Lakers 1
Remaining Schedule:
The Lakers, who are 20-11 at Staples Center, play only 10 of their remaining 23 games at home. In addition, they go on a road trip next week which features games at Dallas, Washington, Philadelphia, Miami, and Indiana. They end the season with relative cream puffs Golden State and Portland, but play three consecutive games right before that against Phoenix, Sacramento, and Dallas. All of those games are at home, but are still tough draws.
The Timberwolves, only 17-14 at home this year, play only 9 of their remaining games at Target Center, and their last two home games are against Seattle (on pace for 59 wins) and San Antonio (on pace to win the West). In addition, they have road games at Phoenix, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Dallas sprinkled throughout their final month and a half.
The Nuggets are 18-9 at Pepsi Center this year, and play 14 of their final 23 contests at home. In the final month, they do travel to Minneapolis, but they also get 2 games against the Hornets — the worst team in the league — and also play Portland and Golden State, both in the Mile High City. The Nuggets also draw the Grizzlies twice in the final three weeks. While the Grizz are playoff-bound themselves, it’s a favorable match-up for a streaking Denver squad.
Points: Nuggets 3, Lakers 2, Timberwolves 1
Intangibles Kobe needs to reach the playoffs as a No. 8 seed, score 50 points every night, and off the No. 1 team in the West. In some ways, it would help restore his credibility and erase notions he can’t do it without Shaq. Also, it might help Frank Hamblen not become an assistant again next year.
The Timberwolves need to prove their 2003-2004 campaign was no joke, and some of their contract year players could benefit from the extra playing time and bigger stage of the playoffs.
The Nuggets are young, and aren’t expected to do much besides make the playoffs. They have a determined team and a determined coach, but aside from Anthony keeping pace with LeBron (who’s probably going to make the playoffs this year), the team doesn’t have a ton to prove right now.
Points: Lakers 3, Timberwolves 2, Nuggets 1
The Final Score: Nuggets 10, Timberwolves 7, Lakers 7
Karl’s bunch is streaking, all right — straight into a first-round date with the best of the West.

Feel Of Good Golf
Youve heard it said dozens of times. Golf is a game of “feel”. You just know instinctively when somethings right or wrong for you.
It sounds a little confusing, doesnt it? Lets try to take that vague feeling and put it into words and action.
First off, lets address the technique of swinging with all your might. If you swing really hard, then you cant get the feel of a correctly hit ball and your muscles dont learn the feel of correct balance. When players have the feel of the shot, their muscles and sense of touch are tuned in to the correct gauge and balance and they just know they can hit the ball.
When you want to lunge at the ball, your power should be developed by twisting your body. If you learn this, it wont take 3 or 4 years before youre hitting the ball a good distance. When you keep failing with a certain shot, just stop and think what youre doing, what youre trying to accomplish. Dont try any certain method unless you have a definite purpose for using it.
Always remember the basics. Think in your mind how it feels to prepare properly for a shot.
One important point is that its not necessary to feel the power during the stroke. You want to swing easily. Its the energy thats transferred to the ball that counts. Get rid of every little detail that destroys your balance and youll get on the right track. Cut out everything thats not comfortable. Your ability to keep your balance and be comfortable is the measure of the amount of power you can use successfully. Many players lift their heads at the last instant. This doesnt add power to the stroke. It actually takes power away from it.
It may sound tricky but you really want to be as comfortable as possible while playing a game and to do things as easily, flexibly and fluidly as possible. Much of this comfortability is purely mental.
Make sure you keep your eye on the ball while youre moving. Thats what counts. When youre doing things comfortably your strength is being properly applied.
The second you brace your muscles, youre moving away from the correct way of playing. If you want to see if your method is right, check your comfortability level. If you get better results with your own method then follow your own method and dont try to imitate someone else. If you want to learn from someone, ask them why theyre swinging in a certain way and if you can learn the reason then you can apply the knowledge in your own way. Just trying to imitate someone elses swing doesnt benefit you.
Over time, youll acquire the ability to know what shot feels right, what club feels best, what decision you should make. Thats the feel. The instinct. The touch of greatness!

Who Else Knows These Facts About Trampolines
“El trampolino” was the Mexican word for “diving board”, and one of the many words in common usage, which was once actually trademarked as “trampoline”.
The first gold medal awarded in Olympic trampoline competition, went to Irina Karavaeva, of Russia. The event, which took place at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, was witnessed by George Nissen, the 86 year-old inventor of the trampoline.
The famous picture taken in the late 50s, of inventor George Nissen on a trampoline with a “tame” kangaroo, was only accomplished by Nissen holding its front paws when they got on it, so the animal could not kick him.
The Gillingham Jumpers, a club based in Kent, England, is the largest known trampoline club in the world, with 1500 members bouncing around the Jumpers Rebound Centre, every week.
Trampolines have entered the arena of “extreme sports”, with some centers offering a combination of bungee jumping and trampoline jumping, where participants wear a harness attached to bungee cord rigging, that allows them to bounce extra high off the trampoline, without the danger of falling if they lose their balance.
The 2005 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, includes a category for the longest slam-dunk of a basketball from a player bouncing on a trampoline.
Judy Wills Cline became the first World Champion on the trampoline, in 1964. Cline held a total of ten world titles in trampoline, synchronized trampoline, and tumbling. The first men’s World Champion, also crowned in 1964, was Dan Millman, who is a noted personal growth author and speaker.
In 1986, a six-man team from the Delta Epsilon fraternity at Cleveland State University, set a Guinness World Book Record for 53 days of continuous bouncing on a trampoline. They received a phone call of congratulations from frater Ronald Reagan.

Finding The Perfect Pool Cue Case
A quality billiard cue case is a necessity to keeping that valuable collector pool cue of yours in good shape. There’s more than one quality that a person should be looking for when considering. These qualities may include, but are not limited to: heat and moisture protection, impact protection, aesthetics of the case itself, and whether or not it will carry shafts of a custom length.
There are numerous styles and variations cue cases. The soft case is the least desirable, because it gives very minimal protection — only preventing minor accidental dents while traveling to and from the pool room. The most important but often least considered element is the prevention of warpage. A cue should never be left leaning against a wall for any length of time. Similarly, if stored in a soft case, one would need to take particular care not to leave their cue (in the case) not leaning against a wall, such as in a closet during hot summer months. A soft billiard case also has little barrier against moisture should there be any kind of water that inadvertently might come into contact with your cue during storage.
The old time box style case will significantly help prevent warpage by holding your cue flat at whatever the angle you choose to lay it at. It also does a moderate job of protecting against moisture, but it leaves little room for any of the more popular accessories. Usually the inside is less padded, thus causing a lot of rattling that can be hard on your cues delicate urethane finish. Many folks choose this type of case because it is more economical and can be easily filled with cloth or tissue to fill any of these voids.
The hard tube style case and its many variations is a popular favorite among the players. The hard shell tube case is by far the most popular cue case because it protects the best against moisture and rattling. I believe that the tube style cases which incorporate a hard foam inside, which is described by many as a “Cue Safe,” are the least desirable of the tube type of case. One might think that foam molded to fit the shape of the cue would be the best protection; however, that is only when one does not consider the many diverse styles of tapers, diameters and lengths of a cue. When you take into consideration that the cases themselves vary in the tightness of the foam itself, it is almost impossible to get that perfect fit. Making matters worse is that some are lined with felt, while others are not. The non-felt lined ones generally end up having a more abrasive foam, which will rub your cue each time your cue is taken in or out. Something important to take into consideration is if you choose to use a joint protector, the pool cue fits even snugger because the case top has to push your cue down harder into an already too tight fit! Over time these cases can leave friction marks, dulling and scratching the finish of your pool cue.
A little known fact is that some of the highest priced cases are actually made overseas in China for the lowest production cost possible. Many of these cases are popular because they find a happy medium between the too loose box case and the too tight cue safe, have large pockets, and are made of genuine leather, but many are bought simply for the name brand recognition. These cases allow the cue to have a little movement, but not enough that it rattles. Some incorporate simple padded fabric dividers, while others incorporate small lined tubes for each shaft and butt.
There are two moderately priced, popular brands of the hard tube type of case made by American manufactures Joe Porper and Giuseppe. My personal favorite is the Giuseppe case because of the high grade of vinyl, the solid feel, the leather tacks on the bottom that protect the vinyl from wear, and the fact that they will let you customize your case with many variations in color and length of the pockets – at no additional cost and with a quick delivery time. They are also longer as a standard stocking models, easily holding a 31″ shaft with joint protectors. Still, for a mere $5 Giuseppe will make an even longer case. There is little to no possibility of having a customization like this done by an overseas manufacturer. This case uses a hard outer tube shell and hard inner lined tubes which are not tapered. The advantage to having the inner tubes untapered is that it allows for varying tapers of cues and for the many users who like to place their cues bottom end in first – allowing the protection advantage of holding the cue securely between shots.
The size of pockets must be considered when considering a case. You must know and foresee what types of accessories you have or might intend to purchase at a later date. The fact that small jump cues are gaining in popularity has made the size of the pockets increasingly more of an important issue. The imported Instroke case has long incorporated a special side zipper and sleeve in the side of their case pocket to hold the small butt end of the jump cue, and now Giuseppe has made a 14 inch pocket for this same reason. Although the Giuseppe does not have the sleeve to hold the jump cue, one could easily wrap the jump cue butt to fit.
Lastly, the only other features to carefully consider are the size and weight of your cue case. The popularity of break cues has almost made it almost a necessity to have a case that will hold two cues and two shafts. Some manufactures, such as Meucci, make their high-end cues come standard with two shafts, and so you will then need to consider purchasing a cue that holds 2 butt 3 shafts, add a special jump cue and a 2 butt 4 shafted case is necessary. Adding to the weight of your case would be choosing to purchase a leather case or a foam filled case, along with all those special new doodads that we all must have.

What Are Those Golf Ball Dimples All About?
How many times have you… wondered why there are dimples all over the golf ball?
In this article I will explain to you why golf balls have dimples. How it controls the flight of the ball and why they are really important to your golf game.
Did you know that golf balls were originally smooth? That is right. Smooth as glass. Here is the funny thing though. Golfers started to notice that the older the golf ball with cuts and bruises traveled longer distances!
Apparently the nicks and cuts on the golf ball caused the ball to fly farther down the fairway compared to a brand new ball. So like all golfers will do, they flocked toward the old balls like a moth on a heat lamp! I imagine at this point some aerodynamicist must have examined the beat up ball syndrome and realized that the cuts were acting as turbulators. These nicks and cuts were reducing drag which gave greater distance!
The dimples on a golf are the same exact thing as these nicks and cuts. The just are modernized! I think this is absolutely amazing. I love learning the history and evolution of golf equipment. Maybe it is custom clubs http://www.golf-equipment-deals.com/What_Are_Custom_Golf_Clubs.ht ml and how they evolved.
Concluding, I hope you enjoyed this brief article on golf ball dimples. So head to the golf course and don’t worry if your ball bounces off a tree. It may help!

What Are Long Drive Golf Exercises
Long drive golf exercises can add up to 30 yards to your drives in a very short amount of time. It’s quite obvious to hit long golf drives you need to have power. Power is the equivalent of both strength and flexibility specific to your golf swing.
The key to implementing long drive golf exercises is to look at the main movement in your golf swing.
What is it?
Is it a lateral movement (side-to-side)? Is it a vertical movement (up and down)? I’ll stop the “twenty questions” and cut to the chase.
It’s a ROTATIONAL movement!
Golf is rotational! You make a backswing (rotate). And you make a downswing (rotate).
If this is the case…what strength and flexibility exercises should be done to maximize your long drives?
You guessed it – ROTATIONAL exercises!
You don’t need to go to a gym and sweat for 2 hours a day. You don’t even need to spend much on equipment. All you need is you, a couple of pieces of affordable golf exercise equipment and a little creativity.
There are dozens and dozens of rotational strength and flexibility exercises you can do right in your home or office that will reap HUGE dividends on the course. In my 350 page Ultimate Golf Fitness Manual, I have pages and pages of these strength and stretching exercises for long drives.
I’m a firm believer in working the “total package” in regards to exercising all the major golf muscles in your body. Every golfer is different, and has unique needs (limitations) that should be addressed.
The major muscles involved with long drive golf exercises are the core muscles (first-and-foremost), the hamstrings, glutes and lower back muscles.
The secondary (support) muscles for incorporating long drive golf exercises are the shoulder rotators, forearms (wrists), upper back (lats), and the hip girdle. These muscles are “icing-on-the-cake” muscles in regards to hitting power golf drives every time you step on the tee box.
This is not rocket-science, but you do need to make sure you are doing the correct exercises that will give you the biggest return on your investment.
I hope you have a better, initial understanding of long drive golf exercises.

Eagle Crest Golf Club Las Vegas
Eagle Crest Golf Club Las Vegas – Eagle Crest is a 4,067-yard,
par-60 executive course built along some of the highest points
in Summerlin. Besides featuring panoramic views of the city, the
course offers plenty of challenge for players who appreciate a
timely-usually about 3 hours-18-hole round. Designer Casper
says, “You can take any hole from this course, put it in the
middle of a championship course, and it would fit right in.”
Built into the side of a mountain, the layout is undulant
throughout, very picturesque and cozy in its surroundings of
Summerlin homes.
The 14 par-3 holes offer a broad length variety, from a short
112 yards to a demanding 224 yards. Three of the six par 4s play
less than 350 yards, while two, the 9th and 13th, measure just
over 400 yards. The dogleg-right, 347-yard 5th hole is cleverly
designed to give players risk-reward choices. Water runs from
tee to green along the right side, and fairway bunkers left
further pinch the landing area for a long-iron or fairway-metal
tee shot. Players who instinctively reach for the driver take
note: The fairway narrows beyond the bunkers, and an additional
fairway bunker left waits to punish drivers that shy too far
away from the water. Greenside bunkers left and back guard the
putting surface. The 18th hole is a straightaway par 4 playing
370 yards. About 250 yards out, the fairway drops 40 feet
towards a large green. Two large fairway bunkers left await
pulled tee shots and greenside bunkers back left and right guard
the front-to-back putting surface.

Hilton Consensus: Week 17
Bells will ring this weekend as champagne flows like water, horns blow and the NFL Playoffs puzzle finally falls into place.
One of the biggest toasts in glittering Las Vegas — where Strip fireworks greet the arrival of a New Year — will be given the Hilton SuperContest champion(s), who, incidentally, will receive $303,000 in winnings and perhaps nail a $10,000 bonus given to any player(s) who nab 67 or more percent winners.
It has been an abominable contest year for dog players, with favorites winning at an abnormal pace that at times approached 60 percent.
The SuperContest is like the Olympics of handicapping, the most prestigious competition of its genre.
This season’s event drew a record field of 505 entries, which cost $1,500 apiece.
Contestants chose five games weekly against a pointspead that was posted on Tuesday, receiving one point for a win and a half-point for a push.
After 17 weeks, countless hours of handicapping, ups and downs and highs and lows, it comes down to this:
Eight players are within five games of first, with the two leaders just a half-game apart.
The Blue Team has 56 1/2 points and Chappy has 56.
It’s another 1 1/2 games back to JT Elite, who is alone in third with 54 1/2 points.
Foolish, Tormented and Blessed — a fixture among the leaders for months — is another game back with 53 1/2 points, one ahead of Feral Child, which has 52 1/2.
A trio of participants is tied for fifth, five games out of the lead: Loose Cannon, Vegassportsline and The Guru and the Commissioner.
Twenty places will cash, with a separate $10,000 going to the winner(s) of a three-week mini-contest.
Hilton participants sided with 10 favorites and six underdogs in whacky Week 17.
Several division titles as well as playoff spots are yet to be determined.
Two games will be played on Saturday, New Year’s Eve, and both will affect the scenario for Sunday’s New Year’s Day card of 14 games.
Both matchups were close calls at the Hilton. SuperContestants took San Diego minus 10 1/2 over playoff-bound Denver 44-38 and Oakland plus 8 1/2 over the New York Giants 63-48.
Top consensus play for Week 17 is Atlanta, which is getting 4 1/2 points from Carolina.
The Falcons are out of the playoff picture while Carolina and Tampa Bay are both 10-5 in the NFL South.
The best consensus favorite bet is two-time defending Super Bowl champion New England, which is giving Miami 4 points. The Pats were a 124-29 choice.
Other selections were Indianapolis 96-31 over Arizona, Baltimore 88-57 over Cleveland, Buffalo 63-36 over the Jets, Chicago 55-36 over Minnesota, Kansas City 58-50 Cincinnati, Pittsburgh 102-26 over Detroit, New Orleans 53-31 over Tampa Bay, Dan Francisci 75-29 over Houston, Jacksonville 72-16 over Tennessee, Green Bay 57-23 over Seattle, Philadelphia 85-44 over Washington and St. Louis 39-28 over Dallas.
There will be no Monday Night Football this week.

Golf Tips – Good Gear and Sportsmanship
If you are just getting into the sport of golf, you have probably heard thousands of golf tips from well-meaning golfers. However, what many golfers fail to realize is that many of the golf tips that work well for one golfer, simply do not work well for another. Here are some golf tips that work well for everyone.
As a beginner, do not rush out and buy a set of high priced clubs. Buy a set of used clubs, or better yet rent your clubs. Take a little time to see if you really enjoy the game of golf, and if you will stick to it first. The used or rented clubs won’t be the top of the line, but they will get you through several games of golf to see if you are going to stick with it. This is also a good opportunity to start researching exactly what clubs you need when you are ready to buy a new set.
Golf is fun, but the sport should not be taken lightly. It is a sport – it isn’t just a bunch of retired men knocking a ball around. It takes a great deal of skill and technique to master the game. The pros you see on television make it look quite simple – but it isn’t. The concepts you will learn from more experienced golfers will sound easy – and look easy – in theory, but in practice, they are quite difficult. The sooner you realize this, the faster you will start to improve your game.
While golf does require skill and technique, it is still meant to be enjoyed and the experience should be relaxing. If you get angry over bad shots or you find that you are not enjoying the game, you should back up and re-evaluate your reasons for playing the game. Try to look at things from a new perspective. It is a game that tests your skill – but it should not test your patience!
Choose your golf aids carefully. A great deal of money can be wasted on aids, courses, and videos that turn out to not be any help at all. When possible, buy used aids, courses, and videos. Save your golfing money for more important things – like clubs, balls, and tees! Used clubs aren’t very good – used training equipment usually works quite well.
Golf is great exercise. Riding in a golf cart defeats that purpose though. Walk, don’t ride! Save the cart for the days when you really are too old to walk a short distance – take advantage of the exercise that you will get by walking from one tee to the next, and take the time to actually enjoy the walk!
Alcohol is often served at the clubhouse – but you should wait until you finish your round of golf before consuming any. First, the alcohol will greatly alter your game. Second, alcohol is a dehydrating substance, and this isn’t safe in the hot sun. Carry water with you during your game, and make sure you drink plenty of it!
Becoming good at the game takes a lot of practice. Use your practice sessions to learn what mistakes you are making, and work to correct them. Don’t just keep making the same mistakes over and over, thinking that it doesn’t matter, or that it is too hard to learn! If you’re going to play, play to win!
Use training aids, and if possible, video tape yourself playing a round of golf, making sure that you get close up shots of you teeing off, close up shots of the club hitting the ball on the tee-off, and even shots of you putting. Have a friend run the camera for you for best results, and review the tape in slow motion to see what needs the most work.
The most important golf tips you will ever receive are the ones that focus on good sportsmanship. Never make fun of other players. Some people do look funny playing golf – but those funny looking people can probably beat every aspect of your game, and they will have the last laugh. Be respectful of your fellow golfers, and listen closely to the advice of the seasoned players.
