A little looking around the site and I find that nothing has been updated since 1997. I always feel a little sad when I see this – it’s as if something inside the webmaster died. I wonder, did she grow tired of it all? Get married and lose interest? Perhaps even died? Who knows, there is no clue on the site at all. It’s just … abandoned.

Another clue to a neglected site – the person created a webring and got several hundred people to join. The ring is obviously a creation of love as it’s not easy to get so many sites to join up. The ring graphics are wonderful, the join page is beautifully written, and I am actually very impressed. I start to surf the ring and quickly find that over half the sites no longer exist. Another dozen have removed the ring code. How sad. It’s one thing to lose interest in a webring … but to just abandon it? I wonder what changed in a person’s life caused this work of love and community to just be discarded so easily.

Or it could be that a person and simply doesn’t update their site very often. There is a wonderful comic book site which is simply beautiful, yet sometimes months go by without a single update! It’s so frustrating as I really am intrigued and want to come back to visit this guy’s private world. I haven’t checked in a long time – why bother, since the site is updated so infrequently?

My feeling is simple. Create the best website that you can with the knowledge that you have. You will never be finished, as there will always be more to say and show. You are a living, breathing human and you are learning more every day. Thus, there should always be something of value that you can add to your web site.Presumably, you’ve created your web site to communicate something to the rest of the world. It could be that you want to write up your life story, explain about the mythology of the Greeks and Romans, or simply compile a list of the best blonde jokes. It’s possible that you even want to make a few dollars now and then by selling a nice product. Why settle for just getting someone to read what you’ve got to say and move on? • Valuable: Internet users pay limited attention to web sites so you need to ensure that your content is worth for them. Your visitors should perceive real and current value from your site in any form (information, advice, entertainment…) so content must be relevant and useful for them.
• Original: Your content will be worthless, even though being relevant and useful, if users can find the exact same thing on other web sites. Give your visitors a reason to choose your site over any other: a personal approach, some added value…
• Large: Valuable and original content will attract visitors; large content will make them come back. Once the users regard your site as a big source of high-quality content, it’s only a matter of time before the amount of returning visitors to your site increases.
• Fresh: Following the previous point, fresh (current, up-to-date) content will also improve the perception of your site, and it will help to keep your visitors coming back. Of course for some kind of web sites (mainly informational) this will be a major issue, whereas for others it will not make such a difference.
• Attractive: This relates not to the content itself but to the way it is presented. You need great content but also that users fully realize it. An incorrect appreciation of your content will make all your efforts to be in vain.
• Free: The fact that your content neeeds to be valuable doesn’t mean that it needs to have a commercial value for your visitors. Luckily the Internet is still the land of the free and, whatever the content you provide, probably someone is offering something similar for free.

  As a general rule, don’t even bother trying to get paid directly for your content. Don’t forget there are other ways to monetize your site, mainly through advertising.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FEEDBACK

Every different person is attracted to very different things, so “good” content as defined before is completely subjective. Hence the importance of knowing your users.

If you are an avid paddler, it is important to become familiar with the different types and parts of rivers. If you are a fan of kayaks or some type of inflatable dinghy, this is must-have knowledge! The first part that you should become familiar with is commonly referred to as chutes. This is the name assigned to a section of fast-moving water that is usually formed after the water flow passes an obstacle of some kind such as an out-cropping of rocks. A chute is comprised mainly of large standing waves called haystacks. When you see these, it will give you some assurance to know the water is deep and probably rock-free.

The next kind is called river bends. Following the inside of a river band is usually the safest route as the water on the outside normally runs much faster and deeper. Typically, on the outside of a river bend, fallen trees and trash will accumulate. These are sometimes dangerous and will put a damper on your kayaking adventure if you end up running into these and flipping over. Keep in mind as well that kayaks do flip and if your personal flotation device gets caught on this debris, you could end up getting pinned underneath and not being able to get out!

Kayaks love eddies. An eddy is a current of water behind obstacles where the water is calm and can be paddled into. This can provide a place of solace, and also a great place to check gear, rest, drain your boat or scout upcoming rapids. Waterfalls and dams are the next type, and should be approached with great caution. These can be run into with a minimum of danger, but you should stay away from them until you have excellent paddling skills. Going over waterfalls in an inflatable dinghy can prove to be disastrous! Try to get information about the obstacles ahead from paddlers who’ve been there before you. Always be aware that there might be underwater obstacles that can take you by surprise as well.
