Betting Patterns
Watch your opponent’s betting and try to understand what he’s thinking when he bets. I used my opponents’ betting pattern against him and put it to pretty good use a few weeks ago playing online poker.
I was at the final table in a tournament in the casino, and I was up against a player that I knew fairly well. I was pretty intimidated at first, because I knew that he was a strong player and I’d had trouble reading him in the past. He was an aggressive poker player, I’d caught him in enough bluffs to take any of his actions with a grain of salt, but he showed a tendency to reveal his bluffs in order to suck players in when he had killer hands.
I played tentatively at first, and he’d bought the majority of the first few hands that we’d played. I was dealt some decent starting hands, and managed to even the score a bit and pull ahead with a few preflop bluffs, and for a while we were at a bit of a stalemate.
Eventually, a hand came around that I felt was worth betting on. I made high pair on the flop, so I raised and he called. The turn put a pair on the board; I raised him and he called again.
The river put a card out that was higher than my pair, and I put in a substantial raise in case he paired on the river. He immediately took two-thirds of his remaining chip stack and put it in the pot. Two-thirds? He didn’t want to risk his whole stack! Without hesitation, I called him all-in. He folded, I raked in the chips, and he never recovered.

Improve your muscle strength.
You want your muscle strength to be the same on both sides of your body to create a fluid, powerful swing. You should particularly focus on back and shoulder strength where strength discrepancies can come into play.
Focus on core stability.
Your core is your torso – the parts of your body that are actively involved in your swing. You want to perform exercises that will strengthen your core or trunk region. This will provide you with needed stability during your swing.
Focus on balance.
If you have good balance, you will be able to transfer your weight during your swing maintaining stability throughout the motion. Good balance also improves your reaction times and movement speed.
Build flexibility.
Range of motion is important to the game of golf because it allows you to execute an exceptional swing without limitations or restrictions. Along the lines of balance, make sure that your flexibility is equal on both sides of your body. Always take a few minutes to stretch and warm-up before you begin a round of golf, so you begin in a flexible state.

Mental Training for Golfers: Attitudes that Sabotage Commitment
Plateaus in performance sometimes occur when you don’t see any measurable improvement in score even though you are working hard. “I’m practicing more than ever, but I don’t seem to be shooting better scores,” many players tell me in frustration. Thus, when you don’t see gains in performance or have a coach pushing you daily, it is difficult for golfers to stay committed to their training. In this issue of Peak Performance Golf Insights, I discuss how golfers lose or sabotage their own commitment to training and ideas for how to increase commitment.
What is commitment? Commitment is a type of motivation. It is the ability to stick with a program, method, or philosophy and apply it daily over a long period even in times of adversity. How do you stay committed to your practice plan and goals? By reminding yourself of your dreams and performing the daily tasks you need to reach your goals.
The first step to improving commitment is to identify beliefs or distractions that sabotage your motivation. Armed with this information, you are in a position to change your attitude for the better. Here are seven ways people get sidetracked or sabotage their own commitment.
1. Impatience with improvement. Probably the number one form of sabotage. Golfers want a quick fix, something that works immediately, and if it does not work fast, they are prone to throw it away and not try it again. This may be true of both the mental and physical parts of the game. This is why a golfer jumps from one instructor to the next looking for the quick fix.
2. Rationalizations that sabotage your success. Rationalizations are excuses people use to avoid doing something. A smoker rationalizes why smoking is not harmful to smoke (smoking won’t hurt me, I’ don’t inhale deeply”), for example. Golfers sometimes rationalize or justify why they should not go practice, take regular lessons, or work on their mental game. Some players think they will be ready to improve mentally when they are finished working on their swing. When are golfers ever finished with their swing?
3. Fear of trying and not succeeding. Are you afraid of going after your dream and not succeeding? There are no guarantees that if you work harder and put all your energy into getting better your game will improve. But some players can’t stomach the fear of not reaching their goals if they give it their all.
4. Distracted by Others. Do others distract your from your mission? Do your friends ask you to go party every night? Are others giving you advise that contradicts what you are trying to do with your coach? If you said yes, then you are letting others distract you from your mission.
5. Over-load Syndrome. Warning: Too much information can be dangerous to your golf game. A few golfers I know actually sabotage their commitment to getting better by listening to every instructor and guru in golf and trying to integrate everything anyone has said about the golf swing or mental game. This person usually ends up more confused, wonders why he is not playing better, and then gives up trying.
6. Over-training Syndrome. Are you a candidate for burnout? Training too much can also cause you to spin your wheels because you are mentally and physically exhausted and are bothered by nagging injuries. Working 15 hours a day on your golf game will not lead to success. Marathon runners don’t run 25 miles a day to prepare for competition. Your body needs rest, your mind needs a break. Yes, it is possible to work too much. There is a term for it in the workforceworkaholic.
7. Know-It-all syndrome. This is more rare with the players I work with, but one that should be mentioned. If you “know it all,” then others, even experts, can’t help you get better. The “know it all” is not teachablehe believes he already has the information to be successful.
Other forms of sabotage exist that limit a golfer’s ability to commit to a programwhether that’s a fitness program to improve strength, a swing training program to hit the ball better, or a mental game program to improve attitudebut these are the most prevalent. The fist step in making positive changes is to identify self-sabotaging beliefs, rationalizations, or behaviors that cut short your motivation to be successful. Then you will be ready to change your behavior to increase commitment.

3 Easy Changes to Shave Strokes from Your Golf Game
Here are 3 easy golf tips that will immediately give you a better swing and improve your hitting! It did for me almost instantly once I got the feel of it.
I went from hitting maybe one fairway per round and not being able to hit my driver to hitting the vast majority of fairways off the tee while still enjoying the extra distance of using my driver. This is exciting stuff for a mid to high handicapper…so read on.
Golf Tip #1 – Be certain that you are taking the club back by turning your shoulders NOT picking up your hands.
By taking the club back in a “one piece” takeaway, which only means that your shoulders start the turn back and your arms, hands and thus club follow in one piece – by doing this you will automatically put the golf club on the proper swing plane. So long as you do not try to help the club do its job, you will be well down the path to a more solid swing and consistent hits with this tip alone.
Practice this in front of a mirror with or without a club, making sure that your head stays solidly in place and that your three body parts mentioned above go to at least parallel as one unit.
Golf Tip #2 – Don’t overswing and swing easy. They engineer the clubs to do the hitting – getting the ball off the ground and a certain distance no matter how hard you swing. As a matter of fact, the harder you swing the less the club can do what it is supposed to do and you will sacrifice both distance and accuracy.
Just make a full shoulder turn and a good wrist cock then return the club from where it came from! When I say swing easy I do not mean decelerate on the downswing. What I do mean is find a good tempo and naturally accelerate through the ball on your downswing with a complete follow through.
Golf Tip #3 – Relax and enjoy the game. Tension in your golf swing is your biggest enemy. One of the tips that I have recently read is that once you get over your shot and are ready to swing….SMILE!! Believe it or not it works…it is extremely hard to be tensed up and smile at the same time.
These 3 simple tips have taken 5 to 10 of those “dumb” giveaway strokes off my game and it will yours too! Just get the swing thought in your mind of takeaway with the shoulders for a full turn, easy swing back through the ball to let the club do the work and relax! You will be excited to start see those shots going longer and straighter very soon!

“I will lose flexibility if I lift weights.”
In fact, the opposite is true! Weak muscles are also tight muscles. When you do resistance training, you are increasing blood flow, working through a functional range of motion specific to golf, and strengthening the tendons and ligaments in every joint of your body. In conjunction with a stretching program, strength training will improve flexibility, not hinder it.
“Weight training will cause me to lose feel.”
By strengthening your muscles specific to golf, you will have better control of your body. A golf fitness program trains your body specifically for your golf game. When you improve functional strength, you have more control and balance, which will improve your feel. Strength training involves body awareness, muscular control, and coordination. These are all key elements for enhanced golf.
So in summary, golf fitness can be done when you are in your early teens (with supervision), or into your late 80’s. I have personally worked with people in there 70’s and 80’s who increased their strength 100%. This was partly due to the initial level of fitness being so low. My point is, that it is never too late to start. Search out a fitness professional or conditioning specialist to design a golf specific program and you will play better than you ever imagined!
