It took one round for me to lose the chip lead, and before I knew it, I was out of the money and the chips were getting shuffled around the table with every hand.

So, what to do about this? Well, I generally just turn off the player chat feature on any online poker site I happen to be playing at. Most will allow you to do this as an option, to block any player comments in the chat window.

You could come off as being rude, if someone asks you a questions or says “nice hand” or something and you don’t see it, but that is not such a big deal. We’re here to win money, not to make friends. And if you turn off the player chat option, all the annoying people who write annoying things in an attempt to get you off your game will be powerless. All you have to worry about is taking their money.

When a online poker player is down to a short stack in a poker online tournament, the end is in sight unless that player can execute some good steals or get very lucky. Since it’s impossible to control poker luck, the only thing one can do as short stack is go on the attack. Your goal is stay alive at the casino and to do so, you have to fight to keep your stack from falling to less than seven times the big blind. At later stages of a tournament, the average stack is most likely at least 20x the blind, so any stack shorter than 10x the blind is in peril. Once your stack diminishes to that level, you still have some effective scare power because players tend to tighten up at toward the end of tournaments, and by calling a stack that is 8x the blind, they are probably putting about half their chips at risk. By shoving your short stack in, you do gain fold equity. If your stack dwindles to 5x the blind, you are likely to get called. You must be very aware of the size of your stack and your location in relation to the button at this point. Make a point to create an image of being afraid and tight at this point so that the other players will respect an all-in shove as a sign of a strong hand. When you only have a stack that is a few times the multiple of the blinds, the best strategy is to shove it all-in before the blinds get to you rather than wait for the blinds. Players are more likely to call the forced blind bet and to fold to voluntary all-in.
